If you are a fan of Clairo, Phoebe Bridgers, or Lizzy McAlpine, Grace Gardner is for you. On my way to Brooklyn on 7/16, my train was delayed and I felt a feeling of panic that I was going to miss both openers for Frances Forever. However, the minute I stepped into Baby’s, I heard the soulful voice of an angel – hint, it was Grace – and I was overjoyed that I made it to the second opener’s set!
The queer singer-songwriter is well-known online for their song Deny Me, which has over 1.9 million listens on Spotify. Hailing from Texas and currently making music in Philadelphia, Grace experiments both lyrically and sonically by combing their southern folk roots with 70’s and 80’s rock.
Performing solo for the majority of their set, Grace connected with the crowd through their songs about tough situationships, anxiety, and the 20-something year old life. They brought out their collaborator and Frances’ guitarist, Soraya Rafat, for the second half of the set. With only the sounds of light electric and acoustic guitars, everyone in the room was silent as we all listened to Grace’s talent shine.
